Rock the Block is Coming to Doty Island!

Last night the DIDC Board had a guest speaker at their meeting: Ryan Roth from Habitat from Humanity. Ryan talked to the board, along with community members, about next year's Rock the Block event scheduled for the west side of Doty Island in July 2017. Ryan explained what Rock the Block is and shared highlights from the Neenah event held last spring and the Menasha event held last week.

WHAT IS ROCK THE BLOCK®?

Rock the Block® is an event held in a targeted neighborhood for a concentrated period of time - in our case it will be the WEST side of Doty Island (west of Commercial Street). As for the length of time, the most recent Rock the Block took place in Jefferson Park and lasted six days. The Rock the Block event focuses on small-scale home repair and preservation projects for low income homeowners. The home repairs focus on external repairs and can include such projects as: replacement of windows/doors, rebuilding a deck, laying cement, hauling and spreading dirt/mulch/seed (my team hauled five yards of dirt for our Jefferson Park project!)...among many other tasks. Other community projects may also be done such as spreading mulch, rebuilding picnic tables or other tasks. The community projects improve and beautify the neighborhood surrounding the homes.

FINANCING OF ROCK THE BLOCK®?

Homeowners will pay for their home improvements through non-interest deferred loans. Many donations are given to Habitat for Humanity by individuals and companies. The money raised pays for community projects and program expenses.

This year DIDC will be raising funds for July's Rock the Block Event through our annual Mowry's Table fundraising. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $3,000. We will match up to $1,000. All funds raised will be donated to the Fox Valley's Habitat for Humanity for the Doty Island Rock the Block event. If you'd like to contribute to our fundraising efforts, please either CLICK HERE to be routed to our Doty Island webpage or send a check or money order to:

VOLUNTEERS WILL BE NEEDED!

With the three Rock the Block events since September 2016 (Neenah, Appleton, Menasha), each of the events had 500+ volunteers helping to improve and beautify their neighborhoods and community. Volunteers are not only needed for the physical labor, but also catering/serving the food, organization of the event, setup, cleanup, delivering refreshments to the workers....and much, much more!
